Hardware requirements

Prior to deploying MKE, consider the following minimum and recommended hardware requirements for MKE manager and worker nodes.

For highly-available installations, also ensure that there is a way to transfer files between hosts.

Note

  • On manager nodes, MKE only supports the workloads that it requires to run.

  • Windows container images are typically larger than Linux container images. Therefore, provision more local storage for Windows nodes and for any MSR repositories that store Windows container images.

Minimum hardware requirements

  • 8 GB of RAM

  • 2 vCPUs

  • 10 GB of free disk space for the /var partition

  • 25 GB of free disk space for /var/lib/kubelet/ when upgrading [1]

  • 4 GB of RAM

  • 500 MB of free disk space for the /var partition

  • 25 GB of free disk space for /var/lib/kubelet/ when upgrading [1]

Recommended hardware requirements

  • 16 GB of RAM

  • 4 vCPUs

  • 25 - 100 GB of free disk space, allocated as follows:

    • Preferably, a single /var/ partition of 25 GB or more

    • Separate partitions with a minimum of:

      • 6 GB for /var/lib/kubelet/ (for installations)

      • 4 GB for /var/lib/containerd/

      • 15 GB for /var/lib/docker/

Recommendations vary depending on the workloads.
